Defamation: Finance Minister sues Captain Smart, demands GHC10 Million as damages

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta has sued broadcaster, Blessed Godsbrain Smart popularly called Captain Smart for defamation.

According to the Writ of Summons, the broadcaster is alleged to have made some statements on the May 22, 2022 edition of the ‘Onua Maakye show’ to the effect that Ken Ofori Atta has taken his 10 percent share of the IMF money and that for every loan the nation takes, he gets 10 percent.

“Are you aware that Ken Ofori Atta has taken his 10% of the IMF money? “Every loan we take he takes 10%,” a portion of the Writ of Summons states.

However, the plaintiff, Ken Ofori Atta notes that the statements are palpably false and thus deliberately calculated to disparage him.

Also, he notes that the words are malicious and are intended to convey and would be understood to convey meanings that diminish him in the thinking of right-thinking members of society.

Additionally, the plaintiff notes that he has been significantly injured in his character, and reputation and has been brought into public ridicule and embarrassment by virtue of these statements by the broadcaster.

He further indicates that he demanded an apology from the defendant in a letter dated May 29, 2023, but the latter refused.

Mr. Ofori Atta is thus seeking additionally, an apology for a retraction of those words by the defendant.

Also a perpetual injunction against the defendant, his agents, etc from making such defamatory statements against him.
