A Circuit Court in Kumasi has granted a GHC100,000 bail to Gabriel Agah, a member of the communications team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who was remanded into police custody for allegedly using the name of former President John Mahama to defraud an unsuspecting victim.

He is facing charges of defrauding by pretence.

The accused who pleaded not guilty to the charges was remanded by the court during his first appearance on December 17, 2021.

His bail comes with three sureties, one to be justified with landed property, the court ordered during a second hearing on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

This was after his lawyers pushed for his release after spending nearly two weeks in police custody.

He was arrested by police in Kumasi on December 12 after a tip-off.

He is said to have allegedly used the name of the former President to defraud a businessman, Nana Poku Agyemang of GH¢150,000.

“So far, GH¢50,000 had been collected. He even went for another GH¢100,000, and he was arrested,” Head of Legal and Prosecution at the Ashanti Regional Police Command, Chief Superintendent, Kofi Blagodzi said during an interview at the time of the accused arrest.

The case has been adjourned to February 2, 2022, to allow the police to make more disclosures.
