Court denies Aisha Huang, 4 others bail : Adjourns case to Oct 24, Nov 1 respectively

A High Court in Accra has denied the alleged Chinese Galamsey queen, bail and thus remanded her into police custody to reappear on October 26.

Alternatively, the case of her four accomplices made up of 3 Chinese and a Vietnamese has been adjourned to November 1, 2022.

Aisha Huang and three others are facing the charges of mining without a license and engaging in the sale and purchase of minerals without a valid license.

According to the new charge sheet filed on Friday, September 16, 2022, Aisha Huang is being charged additionally as follows for offenses she committed between 2015-2017;

Count One: Undertaking a mining operation without a license contrary to section 99(2) (a) of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006, Act 703 as amended by the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act 2019, Act 995.

Count Two: Facilitating the participation of persons engaged in a mining operation contrary to section 99 (2)(a) & (3) of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006, Act 703 as amended by the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act 2019, Act 995.

Count Three: Illegal employment of foreign nationals contrary to section 24 of the Immigration Act, 2000 (Act 573).

Count Four: Entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry contrary to section 20(4) of the Immigration Act, 2000, Act 573.

When the case was called today, October 11, 2022, the lawyer for Aisha, Captain Nkrabea Effah-Darteh made a case for his client to be given bail but the same was declined by the court presided over by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo.

The Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, who was in court, emphasized the state’s commitment to a speedy trial of the case to ensure the accused are brought to book.

Also, he mentioned that the state has filed four witness statements and 18 pieces of evidence and thus prayed to the court for an adjournment in order for additional documents to be filed.

The presiding judge, therefore, acceded to this request and thus adjourned the case to October 24.

Further to the above, the four accomplices, including three Chinese nationals; Shi Yang, Li Wei Guo, and Shi Mei Zhi, and a Vietnamese, were remanded to the custody of the NIB, expected to appear on November 1, 2022.
