An Accra High Court has heard details of how intelligence officers of the Ghana Armed Forces passed sensitive security information to appointees of the government to uncover and thwart plotters who were scheming to topple the government.

A news report filed by JoyNews indicates that the Chief of Staff of the General Headquarters of the GAF, Major General Nicholas Peter Andoh revealed to the court that shortly after intelligence of the plot was received in June 2018, a meeting was convened which had in attendance, the Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul; Minister of State in charge of National Security, Bryan Acheampong and then National Security Coordinator, Joshua Kyeremeh.

Major General Andoh is the state’s second witness in the trial against some ten persons who have been accused of committing high treason.

In his witness statement, Maj. Gen. Andoh revealed that after reviewing the intelligence reports it had gathered, the decision was reached by the participants in that high powered meeting, to mount surveillance on the suspects. Such surveillance included infiltrating the ranks of the suspects for audio and video recordings of their meetings, feigning various illnesses in order to be admitted at the Citadel Hospital owned by Dr. Frederick Yao Mac Palm, another suspect in the case.

The witness also revealed that the then Bureau of National Investigations (now National Intelligence Bureau) was contacted for support during the sting operation.

The success of the operation has now afforded the state, the recordings that are relevant for the trial of the alleged coup, according to Maj. Gen. Andoh.
