The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Philip Naameh has distanced himself from a CNN publication indicating that the church’s endorsement of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill is to ensure Muslims do not become the majority in the country.

According to him, the publication by the CNN is simply an attempt to wound the unity the bill has enjoyed from the religious groups in the country.

After an interview with CNN on the bill, the international news organization quoted the clergyman on October 8 as saying that “those who are promoting gays and lesbians are not going to have children at all, and within a short time nobody should be surprised that Muslims will become a majority in this country and declare it an Islamic state.

This statement was however met with the fiercest backlash from some members of the public who noted that the statement was in very bad taste.

However, Most Rev Naameh has told journalists at a press briefing held on Monday, October 11, 2021 that the position of the church on LGBTQIA+ is one that is endorsed by not only practitioners of the Christian faith, but equally Islam and African Traditional beliefs.

“In the said interview, I am alleged to have said that Ghana risked becoming a Moslem country if LGBTQIA+ is allowed in the country.

I wish to state categorically and for the avoidance of doubt, that the statement attributed to me is false and do not in anyway reflect the actual content of the conversation which has to do with the Church’s support for the Bill,” the statement noted.

Consequently, he has called on “all peace-loving Ghanaians and all people of goodwill to disregard with contempt the fabrications and distortions which are intended to distract our collective quest to make sure the bill is passed.”
