CHRAJ trains staff on engaging in litigation before regional treaty bodies
The two-day exercise is aimed at enhancing the capacity of the Commission's officers at understanding the African Human Rights system and opportunities for engagement, including litigation before regional treaty bodies.
The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has begun a two-day training exercise for its officers and investigators to enhance their capacity at actively engaging in litigation before African human rights and treaty bodies.
The training programme is also to enhance their capacity at understanding the African Human Rights system and opportunities for engagement, including litigation before regional treaty bodies.
The Deputy Commissioner of CHRAJ, Mrs Mercy Larbi, said the training was important because the Commission had not engaged in litigation with regional treaty bodies before.
CHRAJ expects to engage three regional treaty bodies. These are, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR), and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC).
The training was held for 25 staff of CHRAJ and some selected Civil Society Organisations.
“I have no doubt that this training is going to enhance their capacity to do what they are doing better,” the Deputy Commissioner said.
It was held in collaboration with the Network of African National Human Rights Institute.
