Some twenty persons, including the Chief of Yamoah Nkwanta have been arrested by the Central East Police Command over a misunderstanding that occurred during the installation of a chief.

The disagreeing parties are believed to have fired shots indiscriminately in the process, although there were no casualties caused.

The Central East Police Commander, DCOP Okyere Boapeah told Accra-based Citi News, that the two sides had earlier disregarded a directive that had been issued by the Police over the said installation.

Police had cited security reasons and impressed on the two parties not to go ahead with the planned installation. The directive was however unheeded.

“There has been some disagreement as to the right candidate to be installed as the new chief of the Yamoah Nkwanta. The misunderstanding made the regional command invite the parties involved for discussions and possible settlement, and the decision to install the chief was put on hold.”

“The kingmakers of Yamoah Nkwanta installed one chief, and this led to violent confrontation and indiscriminate shooting between the two factions. The regional operation was quick to respond, and 22 suspects have been arrested, including the chief.”

Further information from the police indicate that one pump action gun, a handgun as well as eight cartridges have been retrieved from the twenty-two persons. The Police are still investigating the matter and have indicated that those who are found culpable will be processed for court.

Meanwhile, residents in the town have told the media that the incident has created fear and panic within the community.
