The Circuit Court presided over by Her Honour Patricia Amponsah has issued a warning to prosecutors trying four policemen accused of being behind recent bullion van robberies in the Greater Accra Region.

Prosecutors have failed for a fifth time to file witness statements, a situation that has caused a delay in the trial that began in March.

The judge said the court would compel the prosecution to call its first witness to give oral evidence at the next adjourned date if prosecutors still fail to file witness statements.

The accused police officers; Constables Yaro Afisu Ibrahim, Albert Ofosu, Richard Boadu, and Rabiu Jambedu have also since been on remand, despite requests for bail from their lawyers.

Their lawyers at the hearing again requested bail, arguing that their clients were serving police officers who would not interfere with investigations should bail be granted them.

“My lady we are urging the court earnestly not to discharge the accused persons but grant them bail. If the accused persons are discharged, the prosecutor will re-arrest them and we will start all over again,” Justin Terriwajjah, counsel for Constable Affisu, said.

However, their request was denied by the court, as the judge said she was still unsatisfied with arguments of counsels due to the severity of the case.

The four are facing charges of attempting to commit robbery and abetment of crime.

The court also adjourned sitting to July 5, 2022.
