Bogoso explosion: Government suspends company outsourced to transport explosives

In a letter to the Minerals Commission, the Minister said the directive is to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the explosion that happened last Thursday at Appiate, near Bogoso.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Jinapo, has directed the Minerals Commission to suspend the registration of Joycederk Logistics, the company outsourced by MAXAM Ghana Limited to undertake clearing, warehousing, and transportation of explosives.

In a letter to the Minerals Commission, the Minister said the directive is to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the explosion that happened last Thursday at Appiate, near Bogoso.

“You are hereby directed, in accordance with article 297 of the Constitution, and regulation 27 of the Minerals and Mining (Explosives) Regulations 2012 (L. I. 2177) to suspend the registration of Joycederk Logistics with the Minerals Commission, thereby precluding the company from all mining and mine support services, pending the outcome of investigations into this matter,” the letter read.

On Friday, January 21, 2022, the government suspended the licence of MAXAM Ghana Limited and ordered the interdiction of its Chief Inspector of Mines as investigations into the incident continue.

According to reports, 13 people have died, 179 injured and about 500 homes destroyed, signaling mass displacements.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has also indicated that it would launch the Appiate Endowment Fund, as a way of supporting affected persons.
