“Ghana has therefore produced 7,867 lawyers from 1877 through May 2021. Although we presently have 4882 lawyers in some form or other in active practice, the number of lawyers in good standing is however 3,800,” he noted.
The above revelation was made by the President of the Ghana Bar Association, Mr. Anthony Forson in his speech at the 2021 Bar Conference, which is ongoing at Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
This year’s Bar Conference is on the theme; ENSURING AN INCREASE IN REVENUE MOBILIZATION THROUGH TAXATION FOR THE PURPOSE OF ACCELERATED NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: THE ROLE OF THE LAWYER.
When he took his turn to speak at the conference, Mr. Forson used the opportunity to give an account of his stewardship as President of the Ghana Bar in the last three(3) years.
He noted that 23 ICT projects were embarked upon during his tenure.
Furthermore, Mr. Tony Forson indicated that when his administration took office, the first task they embarked on was the digitization of the records of lawyers in Ghana.
He explained that the Digitization was done from Bar number 1 to the latest lawyer to be called to the Ghana Bar.
“As our first task, we successfully digitized all lawyer records from the Bar Number 1, James Neville Porter, Esq. who was called to the Ghana Bar on 5th April 1877, through Bar number 26, John Mensah Sarbah, Esq., called on 16th September 1887, to Alice Maame Yeboah Nimako Esq., Bar Number 7867, called on 28th May 2021,”he indicated.
