AG secures scholarship for Ghanaian lawyers

The Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame has secured a historic scholarship from the Georgetown University Law Centre. This deal will enable Ghanaian judges, lawyers, and law graduates to study in the renowned academic institution, situated in Washington Dc in the United States of America.

The deal is a result of an intensive engagement between the office of the Attorney General working in collaboration with the Ghana Scholarship secretariat and the University.

Per the novel agreement, a joint scholarship program is expected to be implemented within the next five(5) years. This will therefore deepen the relations between the University and the Ghanaian legal community, and further boost Ghana’s long-standing relationship with the United States of America.

Mr.Dame reiterated his commitment to prioritize legal education locally and internationally to achieve a fully functional and relevant legal system, that works for the people.

This was made known by Mr. Godfred Dame, Ghana’s Attorney General at the signing ceremony last week.

“This program is unique because it is not just simply a client/provider agreement but one where Georgetown University Law Center, perhaps the best of a kind in the world, and my office are fully invested in the further education of Ghanaian judges, lawyers, and legal academics. This can only be good news,” he said.

“My most important responsibility, as Attorney General, is to represent the interests of the people legally and also ensure that we have a functional and relevant legal system that works for the people. In this regard, I am prioritizing legal education, both within and without the country, as a focus area for my Office. The government has already taken significant steps with the massive increase in student admission to the Ghana Law School last year and with the ongoing construction of the Law Village complex. This agreement is further proof of my commitment to the cause. “ he added.

In addition to the above, Mr.Dame hinted at several engagements of such nature by his outfit to strengthen Ghana’s legal system.

“And I promise you more of such initiatives”, he ended.

Georgetown is the oldest Catholic institution of higher education in the United States. The Jesuits have participated in the university’s academic life, both as scholars and as administrators, since 1805. However, the university has always been governed independently of the church, and the majority of Georgetown students are not Catholic.

Georgetown University is a private Jesuit research university in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Founded by Bishop John Carroll in 1789 as Georgetown College, the university has grown to comprise ten undergraduate and graduate schools, among which are the School of Foreign Service, School of Business, Medical School, Law School, and a campus in Qatar. On a hill above the Potomac River, the school’s main campus is identifiable by its flagship Healy Hall, a National Historic Landmark.

Also at the signing ceremony was the Registrar of Ghana’s scholarship secretariat, Kingsley Agyemang. He gave further elaborations on the agreement noting that it would cover students who will give admission to the Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) and the Master of Laws (LLM) programs.

He further revealed that Georgetown has agreed to fund a substantial part of the cost of tuition for students while the government of Ghana would fund the rest.
