215 suspected robbers have been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command in a swoop. The suspects are believed to have information about the perpetrators of recent robberies in the region.

215 suspected robbers have been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command in a swoop. The suspects are believed to have information about the perpetrators of recent robberies in the region.

Background

There has been an increase in the cases of armed robbery in Greater Accra especially. The recent one involves a bullion van attack in which a young policeman and an eyewitness were killed by robbers in daylight.

Also, a 43-year-old man was killed in a robbery at Pig farm. Furthermore, the Honeysuckle forex bureau, close to the Police Headquarters was attacked by armed robbers.

The Regional Police, therefore, began a three-day operation or swoop and ended on Sunday.

The ages of the suspects range between 17 and 52 years, including about 17 females.

The areas targeted for the operation by the Police are Korle Bu, Tesano, Amasaman, Nima, Dansoman, Abokobi, Accra-Central, Teshie, Batsona, Osu, Madina, and Lakeside.

Since the beginning of this year, the police command has embarked on series of such operations.

However, the current three-day operation forms part of efforts by the command to fight violent crimes, street robberies, and drug peddling.

Some items intercepted by the police in the operation include wrapped narcotic substances, sharp implements, tramadol, narcotics laced mixtures, etc.

Through the three-day operation, about 168 motorbikes believed to be used by robbers to facilitate their operations were impounded by the police.

The suspects who were arrested have however been detained by the police for screening to establish a connection with the numerous crimes being investigated.

The general public has been assured of maximum security by the Regional command and further urged to assist the police with relevant information to be able to apprehend criminals.
