Background

Armed robbers yesterday, Monday, June 14, 2021, shot to death, a police officer and an eyewitness, during a robbery incident involving a bullion van at Adedenkpo, a suburb of James Town in Accra.

The police officer was providing security for the van. The driver of the van also sustained severe injuries.

Reports indicate that the van carrying an unknown amount of cash was trailed by some unidentified men who were on several motorbikes, popularly known as ‘okada’.

The Ghana Police Service has meanwhile released a statement to this effect. The statement, which is dated 14th June 2021 is signed by the Director of Public Affairs at the Police Headquarters, Superintendent Sheila Kessie Abayie-Buckman.

The said statement is titled, “INVESTIGATION OF JAMES TOWN BULLION VAN ATTACK”.

In the release, the Inspector General of Police(IGP), Mr.James Oppong-Boanuh is noted to have directed the Director-General Criminal Investigation Department to take over the investigation into the attack on a bullion van at Adedenpo, a suburb of James Town in Accra on 14th June 2021, which led to the murder of a police officer.

It further indicates that preliminary investigation has revealed that some unidentified men on motorbikes crossed the bullion van which was on a pay/collection errand at about 1100 hours and shot the police officer who was on escort duty on the van, killing him instantly.

Moreover, the statement reveals that the armed men fired sporadically in the air and on the driver, who sustained gunshot wounds and is responding to treatment.
