The #FixTheCountry group is demonstrating today, November 26, 2021, against aspects of the 2022 budget, particularly on the introduction of new levies, like the E-levy.

The group titles its demonstration the ‘Yentua Demo’ and will also march to Parliament, to present a petition to the legislative body.

“We are going to present a petition to the leadership of Parliament. We believe that the Executive has the power to propose but Parliament is the only institution that has the power to impose,” Benjamin Darko, one of the conveners of the movement.

“That is why our constitution says Parliament has the power to impose taxes and levies and it is not the power of the Executive to establish the power of imposition,” he added.

The Police Service in a statement yesterday said it had put in place adequate preparations for the demonstration.

“The Accra Regional Command has made adequate arrangements for the #FixTheCountry demonstration slated for Friday, 26th November 2021,” the statement read.

Parliament will however conclude debates on the 2022 budget statement today.

The debates which began on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, have had both sides of Parliament disagree on aspects on the budget. While the Majority side supports the proposed policies, the Minority has described it as insensitive.

The Minority side has also said that it may call for a vote on the budget statement.
