The Tema High Court has denied a Habeas corpus application filed by lawyers for Oliver Barker Vormawor.

According to the presiding Judge, Justice Daniel Mensah, in as much as the accused had been presented before a District Court and denied bail, the writ should fail.

Convener of the #FixTheCountry pressure Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor was on Monday, February 14, 2022, charged with Treason Felony by an Ashaiman District Court and remanded.

The court presided over by Her Honour Eleanor Barnes noted that it did not have the jurisdiction to grant bail to the accused per the nature of the offense thus remanded him to police custody.

Moving the motion in court, however, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, counsel for the accused argued that his client was rather supposed to be brought before a court of competent jurisdiction like the High Court.

He also took a swipe at the Police for their supposed habit of detaining offenders for their own pleasure and called for the Police to be made to show course why the accused should be kept without any court order or taking the same to a court of competent jurisdiction.

Moreover, Justice Srem Sai submitted that the detention of his client was unlawful and lacked judicial blessing because there was no order for his detention or continuous detention.

The Presiding Judge refused the application and advised the Counsel to rather follow the advice of the District Magistrate to either appeal against the said ruling or repeat the same at the High Court.
