A motorist filmed driving dangerously on the Kumasi-Accra highway has been convicted by the La Motor Court in Accra.

Agyarko Richard was arrested after a video showing the incident went viral on social media and drew the attention of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service.

He was driving a Toyota Voxy with registration number EN 551-26.

The footage led to investigations by the MTTD, after which he was put before court on several road traffic charges.

These included driving on the wrong side of the road, obstructing traffic, careless and inconsiderate driving, and endangering the safety of other road users.

Appearing before Her Ladyship Adwoa Sakyi Asumadu on May 8, Agyarko Richard pleaded guilty to all the charges.

The court convicted him on his own plea.

He was fined 260 penalty units, amounting to GH¢3,120. The court said failure to pay the fine would result in 15 days’ imprisonment with hard labour.

Agyarko Richard was also sentenced to an additional two months in prison with hard labour.

In a Facebook post, the Ghana Police Service said the conviction underlined its resolve to enforce road traffic laws and clamp down on reckless driving.

The Service urged motorists to drive with caution, warning that dangerous and inconsiderate conduct on the roads continues to put lives at risk across the country.
