University senior staff begin strike over pay and service conditions

Senior staff at Ghana’s public universities have begun an indefinite nationwide strike in protest at changes they say were imposed on their conditions of service by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The industrial action, which started at the University of Ghana, is expected to affect academic and administrative work across campuses, including lectures and routine services.
Union leaders say the dispute centres on what they describe as a unilateral adjustment to previously agreed terms, including the replacement of overtime payments with a “call-in allowance”, which they argue undermines staff welfare and breaches earlier arrangements.
The FWSC is the state body responsible for coordinating public-sector pay and related working conditions. The unions are demanding urgent engagement with the commission and government stakeholders to restore the original framework and reset trust in the process.
