United States lifts visa restrictions on Ghana – Foreign Affairs Minister announces
Taking to his official X account, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that Ghanaians are once again entitled to five-year multiple-entry visas, in addition to a range of improved consular benefits.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that Washington has rolled back the visa restrictions it imposed on the country earlier this year.
Taking to his official X account, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that Ghanaians are once again entitled to five-year multiple-entry visas, in addition to a range of improved consular benefits.
“This good news was directly communicated to me by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, at a bilateral meeting earlier today, on the margins of the UN General Assembly.
I am really pleased that months of high-level diplomatic negotiations have led to a successful outcome,” he wrote.
The US sanctions, first introduced in July, restricted Ghanaian applicants to three-month, single-entry visas. The policy was part of a broader measure targeting several countries accused of high visa overstay rates, with Ghana reportedly singled out for student-related infractions.
According to Mr. Ablakwa, the latest development restores “healthier and stronger Ghana-USA relations,” signaling a positive turn in bilateral ties.
