Unemployed man remanded for assaulting police officer at station

A 20-year-old unemployed man has been remanded by the Nsuta Circuit Court after pleading guilty to assaulting a police officer at the Juaben Police Station.
Kofi Berko, a resident of Juaben, is alleged to have been part of a group that attempted to force the release of a suspect from police custody.
The court, presided over by Simon Nketiah Gagah, remanded him into police custody on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
He is expected to return to court on September 4 for conviction and sentencing.
Chief Inspector Maxwell Senu, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant, Sergeant Ernest Atta, is stationed at the Juaben Police Station.
According to the prosecution, Sergeant Atta had closed from duty at about 7:30 p.m. on August 25 and was on his way home when he was approached by one Kwaku Boateng.
Boateng allegedly informed him that some young men had attacked officers at the station’s charge office in an attempt to free a suspect detained for stealing.
Sergeant Atta returned to the station to assist his colleagues.
The prosecution said he found Berko struggling with Constable Kuffour Collins while allegedly trying to force his way into the charge office.
Berko was described by the prosecution as the alleged ringleader of the group.
The court heard that when Sergeant Atta questioned him over the alleged mobilisation of about 50 young men to attack officers, Berko became aggressive and assaulted him.
The prosecution said the assault led to Sergeant Atta’s shirt being torn.
The District Commander, ASP Samuel Asare, was later informed of the incident and went to the station.
According to the prosecution, ASP Asare held Berko by his trousers while explaining the seriousness of the alleged conduct.
Berko allegedly attempted to attack the commander, who was in uniform.
Police officers eventually overpowered him and placed him in custody.
A formal complaint was later lodged, and Berko was cautioned and questioned.
The prosecution said he admitted the offence during interrogation.
After his guilty plea in court, he was remanded to await conviction and sentencing.
