UK: Crime Commissioner banned from driving after being caught speeding five times in 12 weeks

A Conservative police and crime commissioner who promised a road safety crackdown has been banned from driving after she was caught speeding five times in 12 weeks.

Caroline Henry, the PCC for Nottinghamshire Police, admitted the offences and said she was "truly sorry".

She was fined £2,450 and banned for six months for exceeding 30mph limits in a blue Mercedes and a Lexus with a private number plate.

There have been calls for her to step down but she previously said she wanted to stay in her £76,000 job.

After sentencing, she declined to answer questions about whether she would now resign.

"Quite properly I've been fined and banned from driving for six months," said Henry.

"I remain committed to serving the people of Nottinghamshire as police and crime commissioner."

Henry was captured speeding twice near a primary school in Daybrook, Nottingham; on the A610, and in Chilwell and Beeston.

She was recorded going 40mph, as well as 38mph and 35mph, during a 12-week period from March to June last year.

District Judge Leo Pyle said it showed Henry was "driving at consistent speeds above the speed limits".

She was teary at times as she gave evidence on Monday, reported Nottinghamshire Live.

Henry told the court that relying on public transport would cause exceptional hardship and make it difficult to transport her children.

However, she was still banned after getting three penalty points for each of the five offences.

At a police and crime panel meeting last month, Henry said she remained "absolutely committed" to reducing speeding, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
