Two robbers to serve 40 years imprisonment, 3 on remand

According to the Upper East Regional Police Command, the two were arrested and put before the court as part of a new security strategy to deal with robberies in the region. A statement from the command on Monday, June 7, noted.

One of the two, Awinaba Ayembil Joel, who is 30 and a farmer, was picked up in Wasa Akropong where he went into hiding after a suspected robbery in Zebilla.

The statement noted that he was subsequently put before the Bawku Circuit Court on 2 charges of conspiracy and robbery.

He was found guilty by the court and sentenced to 25 years with hard labour on Friday, June 4.

The second convict, whose name is Mathias Asagba, 20 years was on May 26, convicted by the Bolgatanga Circuit Court, to 15 years with hard labour.

Three others were also in police custody for alleged beating and robbing a motorbike.

The victim lodged a formal complaint with the Sandema Police that on May 16, at about 9:15 am while he was travelling on the Fumbinsi-Kanjaga road, he was attacked, beaten and his motorbike taken at gunpoint by some group of men.

Salifu Gala, one of the suspects, was arrested on May 18 at Sandema after the victim identified him.

His accomplice, Amadou Sambo was also arrested at Opiensa, a suburb of Doninga in the Builsa South District. On him, was a knife, belonging to the victim.

Adam Yaro,24 years, a third accomplice was also identified in a motorbike robbery. He was arrested at Yagaba in the North East Region.

When put before the court, the three were remanded into police custody. They are to reappear on June 28.

A fourth suspect, Iddrisu Mahadu, is however on the run in connection with the same robbery.
