Two men charged after alleged robbery of ride-hailing driver in Teshie
Eric Adjetey Adjei, 26, who is unemployed, and Godwin Abbey, 21, a fisherman, have both been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.
Two young men accused of robbing a Yango driver of his mobile phone and cash have appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.
Eric Adjetey Adjei, 26, who is unemployed, and Godwin Abbey, 21, a fisherman, have both been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery. They pleaded not guilty.
The court granted them GH¢200,000 bail, to be supported by two sureties — one required to justify the bond with landed property. Original title documents must be lodged at the court registry. Prosecutors were instructed to file all disclosures and serve witness statements ahead of the next hearing.
According to the prosecution, the victim, Samuel Coffie, a Yango driver using a Daihatsu vehicle (registration GT 2714-25), accepted a ride request from the accused persons at around 05:00 GMT on 11 August 2025.
The pair allegedly hired him from Teshie Mobile to the LEKMA Hospital area. The journey, however, took a violent turn.
Police say that when the vehicle reached a section of the road in Teshie, the two men asked to get out before the agreed destination. As the driver parked, Adjei — seated in front — opened the door as if to alight and placed one foot on the ground.
Without warning, he allegedly grabbed the driver’s Samsung phone and GH¢1,500 in cash.
The prosecution told the court that Coffie tried to hold onto Adjei through the car window, sparking a struggle. During the tussle, the vehicle is said to have swerved off the road and crashed into a drain.
Both suspects reportedly ran from the scene.
An alarm raised by residents prompted a swift community response. Locals apprehended the two men, who were “almost lynched” before police officers intervened.
The suspects were taken to hospital for treatment and later discharged.
Coffie, who suffered bruises to his face and hand, received a medical form to seek further treatment.
Investigators say the two men admitted the offence in their caution statements following their arrest.
The case is expected to return to court once the parties complete the exchange of documents.
