Two men, Albert Okai and Amoako Darko, have been sentenced to three months in prison with hard labour for illegally dumping refuse at the Accra Post Office area.

The pair, who pleaded guilty, were each fined 50 penalty units (GH¢600) but were jailed after failing to pay. They will serve their terms at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

A third accused, Michael Osei, pleaded not guilty and has been remanded for one week, pending the continuation of his trial.

Speaking after the ruling, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, said the conviction reflects the city’s tough stance against indiscriminate dumping.

He stressed that strict enforcement of sanitation by-laws is necessary to protect public health and ensure a cleaner capital.
