Two men have been handed 20-year prison sentences each after pleading guilty to charges of illegal possession of tramadol hydrochloride, following a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) in the North East Region.

The convicts, Mumuni Iddrisu and Alhassan Braimah, were part of a group of six arrested on 18th September 2025 at Gbintiri near Nalerigu in connection with a haul of 1,195 boxes of tramadol hydrochloride (120mg), popularly called “Red.”

Investigators found 100 boxes directly in their possession, along with 4,500 packs concealed in 25 yellow gallons.

At the Nalerigu Circuit Court, the two pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of restricted drugs without lawful authority. Presiding Judge Justice Francis Asobayire sentenced each of them to 10 years per count, to run consecutively, plus a fine of 5,000 penalty units (GH¢60,000). Failure to pay will result in an additional 10 years in jail.

The other four accused — Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Yakubu, and Moses Ayorik — were acquitted for lack of evidence.

The convicts have since been transferred to Gambaga local prison to begin their sentences.

Police praised the Nalerigu Youth Association (NAYA) for their role in the bust and cautioned that anyone involved in the illicit drug trade “will face the full rigours of the law.”
