Two arrested over killing of Yidani chief and son
The suspects have been identified as Majejiba Magne, 25, and Haruna Nlegle, 34.
Police in the Northern Region have arrested two men in connection with the killing of the enskinned chief of Yidani, Naa Ntimla Nwenisim, and his son, Ntimla Bilaga.
The suspects have been identified as Majejiba Magne, 25, and Haruna Nlegle, 34.
They are currently in police custody assisting investigations.
The chief and his son were shot dead at their residence in Yidani in the Gushegu District in the early hours of August 14, 2026.
According to the police, three unidentified armed men entered the chief’s compound at about 3:00 a.m. and demanded to be shown his room.
They allegedly forced their way into the chief’s quarters and opened fire.
Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, said the bodies of the chief and his son were later found with apparent gunshot wounds.
Police also recovered five empty BB cartridges from the scene.
A post-mortem conducted at the Tamale Teaching Hospital on August 17 found that both men died from multiple shotgun injuries and haemorrhagic shock.
Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a special operations team to the area.
Police patrols were also intensified in Yidani and nearby communities.
DCOP Lavoe said the breakthrough came on August 26 after police received intelligence that two suspects were travelling from Dombine towards Chereponi.
Officers in Chereponi intercepted the two men and later transferred them to the Yendi Divisional Command on August 27.
The Northern Regional Police Command says investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killings.
Police are also working to identify and arrest any other persons who may have been involved.
DCOP Lavoe appealed to residents of Yidani, Dombine, Gushegu, Chereponi and surrounding communities to volunteer information that could assist the investigation.
He also urged the bereaved family and residents to remain calm and avoid any act of reprisal or vigilantism.
The police commander warned that anyone found culpable in the killings would be prosecuted.
