An intelligence-led operation by the IGP Special Operations Team in Tamale has resulted in the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of suspected illicit drugs, cash and unregistered motorcycles.
The swoop, led by DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, was carried out at Belpela following information about suspected drug activity in the area.
Police say Ibrahim Abubakari was picked up on suspicion of dealing in illicit drugs. Officers allegedly found on him two tablets of Royal 225, one tablet of Tramadol 120mg and cash totalling GH¢1,378.
A second suspect, Awumi Andrew, was arrested for allegedly using dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp. One rolled substance suspected to be cannabis was retrieved from him.
DSP Jalil said the operation formed part of efforts to disrupt the local drug supply chain and protect young people from substance abuse.
He added that four mobile phones believed to belong to other suspects who fled the scene were also recovered, along with four unregistered motorcycles impounded at Lamashegu and the Tamale Taxi Rank.
The Special Operations Team later extended patrols to the Tamale Central Market and Taxi Rank, but no further arrests were made.
Police say the overall security situation in the Tamale Metropolis remains calm and that the two suspects, together with the exhibits, have been sent to the Sakasaka Police Station for further investigation.
