Tech giants, Twitter, have announced that it is preparing to roll out a feature that will let users know if a potential tweet can generate intense reactions.

It comes at a time when social media networks have been criticized for doing little to curb online hate, racial abuses and sexist accusations.

Organizations such as the Premier League have urged social media companies to do more to tackle racial abuses that are meted out to players of football clubs online.

More recently, three black English players were subjected to social media abuse on Twitter for missing penalties in the final of the Euro 2020 competition against winners, Italy.

Twitter announced that it is testing prompts on Android and iOS that will give “you a heads up if the convo you’re about to enter could get heated or intense”.

The platform added that “this is work in progress as we learn how to better support healthy conversation”.

Some users have however noted that this may not be enough.

One user, @cheryllynneaton wrote for instance that “Nah. I’ll explain why. One, trolls do not care about the vibe of a conversation. The goal for them is disruption and harassment. Two, I know I’m going to be irritated if you tell me a conversation about my day to day life is “intense” because I have to deal with bigotry.”
