The Trade and Industry Minister KT Hammond is set to present a new legislative instrument to Parliament to regulate cement prices in the country.
This action follows a boycott by cement manufacturers during a stakeholder meeting held on Monday, July 1.
The decision comes in response to rising concerns about the increasing cost of cement, which has reached an average of GH¢105 per bag.
The government is seeking to address this issue through legislative intervention.
Initially, a meeting was planned between Minister KT Hammond and key players in the cement industry to discuss the new regulation.
However, representatives from major manufacturers, including GHACEM, Dangote, CBI, Cimaf, and Diamond Cement, boycotted the session.
The boycott was reportedly due to the unexpected presence of the media at the Ministry’s premises.
Industry representatives were displeased, believing the meeting was supposed to be a private, closed-door discussion.
Despite the manufacturers' absence, Minister KT Hammond continued with the meeting and addressed the journalists present.
He emphasized his commitment to protecting the state's interests and defended the inclusion of the media, despite the manufacturers' objections.
