A desperate search is underway at Twifo Mampong after a galamsey pit caved in last Thursday, leaving three men dead and four others trapped underground.

According to eyewitness accounts, seven people were working at the site when disaster struck — four underground digging for gold while three others manned a pumping machine above ground. One survivor managed to escape and raised the alarm.

District Chief Executive for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Isaac Yawson, said initial findings suggest the pit belongs to a well-known illegal miner. The victims are believed to have sneaked into the site at night without the owner’s consent.

Authorities have since ordered the arrest of the pit owner while rescue efforts continue amid mounting concerns over safety in illegal mining zones.
