The Ghana Police Service has apprehended three individuals following a violent incident that broke out during a football match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC in Nsoatre, located in the Bono Region.

The chaos, which erupted on February 2, resulted in the tragic death of one person.

The arrested suspects, identified as Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Agyemang Duah Owusu, and Kyeremeh Joseph, are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.

A search of Agyemang Duah Owusu’s residence led officers to discover two garments stained with what is believed to be blood, along with an MP 23 pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition. The discovery has intensified concerns about escalating violence in football.

Following the incident, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare personally reached out to the bereaved family and the leadership of Asante Kotoko, assuring them of a comprehensive investigation to ensure justice is served.

Meanwhile, Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has vowed to enhance security at football venues nationwide.

In response to the violence, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended all Premier League matches as investigations proceed.
