Thief jailed 5 years for stealing ECG equipment
Asimah Delali, a rubbish collector popularly known as "Ayigbe", was convicted after pleading guilty to charges of stealing and tampering with ECG’s distribution infrastructure.
A man described as a habitual thief has been sentenced to five years in prison by an Accra Circuit Court for stealing property belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), causing disruption to power supply in the area.
Asimah Delali, a rubbish collector popularly known as "Ayigbe", was convicted after pleading guilty to charges of stealing and tampering with ECG’s distribution infrastructure. The presiding judge, Samuel Bright Acquah, cited Delali’s two prior convictions for similar crimes in delivering a stiffer sentence.
According to the prosecution, led by Ama Frema Asante, Delali struck again on June 8, 2025, when he unlawfully accessed the premises of the Africa Trade House in Accra. There, he removed an Electrical Distribution Pillar door valued at GH¢5,000 and an Electrical Termination Cover, triggering a power outage in the area.
The theft did not go unnoticed. Winfred Wayem, Head of Security at Africa Trade House, and a team quickly moved in and apprehended Delali with the stolen components in hand. He was subsequently handed over to the police.
During questioning, Delali confessed to the theft in front of an independent witness. He admitted sneaking through the building’s outdoor garden to access and remove the electrical parts.
Delali, who has no permanent address, had previously served a 12-month and a 6-month sentence for similar offences, making this his third conviction involving ECG property.
