A 27-year-old excavator operator, Faddy Paul Appiah, has been sentenced to 10 years of hard labor by the Tarkwa Circuit Court for stealing a tricycle motorbike worth GH¢20,000.

Appiah, who admitted to selling the stolen Apsonic tricycle for GH¢15,000 and receiving a partial payment of GH¢7,500, pleaded guilty to the charges. Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu subsequently convicted him, the presiding judge.

According to Chief Superintendent of Police Alex Odonkor, who led the prosecution, the complainant, Rockson Dapaah, is a mason residing in Nyamekyekrom, a suburb of Bogoso, while the convict resides in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

In February 2024, Dapaah purchased the Apsonic tricycle motorbike with the registration number M-23-WT 1206 for commercial purposes and entrusted it to Isaac Akuffo, a witness in the case.

On July 20, 2024, the tricycle developed a mechanical fault while Akuffo was working. He notified Dapaah, who advised him to take the vehicle to Master Koduah, a mechanic. That evening, Akuffo parked the faulty tricycle at Koduah’s workshop, as the mechanic was unavailable, and went home. When he returned the following day, the tricycle was missing.

Dapaah reported the incident to the Bogoso police, and on September 14, 2024, Adu Gyamfi was arrested in possession of the stolen tricycle. During police investigations, Gyamfi disclosed that he had purchased the vehicle from Appiah for GH¢15,000, paying GH¢7,500 upfront and promising to pay the balance once the documents were provided.

Gyamfi was granted bail to assist in further investigations. On October 14, 2024, Gyamfi informed the police that he had convinced Appiah to come to Bogoso from Tarkwa Nsuaem under the pretense of completing the transaction. Around 11:30 AM that day, police intercepted Appiah at the Timtimhwe Police Post near Bogoso and transferred him to the Bogoso police station.

Upon interrogation, Appiah claimed that on July 21, 2024, a man named Albert Koduah had contacted him, saying he had abandoned a tricycle motorbike on the Insu-Siding to Huni-Valley Road due to a fuel shortage. Appiah confessed to secretly taking the tricycle and selling it to Gyamfi. However, he failed to cooperate with the police to locate or apprehend Albert Koduah for further investigation.
