Suspected gunman killed during police operation in Tamale

A man believed to be part of a criminal network operating in Tamale has died following what police say was an exchange of gunfire in the Aboabo Forest enclave.

Officers conducting an intelligence-driven sweep of the area on Monday encountered a group suspected of involvement in robbery and drug trafficking. According to police sources, the team came under “sudden and sustained” fire as they moved through the forest.

The officers, acting under the service’s rules of engagement, returned fire in what they described as a defensive response to an imminent threat. One man was hit during the confrontation while the rest of the armed group fled before reinforcements arrived.

Police say they attempted to administer aid to the injured suspect and transported him to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been taken to the morgue pending a post-mortem examination.

Investigators believe the encounter confirms earlier intelligence suggesting that criminal actors within the enclave were heavily armed and prepared to engage officers to avoid arrest.

The operation forms part of a wider crackdown on violent crime and narcotics-related activity in the Northern Region.
