Supreme Court fixes July 2 for judgment on CJ Torkornoo removal consolidated cases
A seven-member panel of the apex court, presided over by Justice Amadu Tanko, fixed the date after adopting the proposed memoranda of issues filed by the parties.
The Supreme Court will deliver judgment on July 2, 2026, in four constitutional cases challenging the processes that led to the suspension and removal of Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo as Chief Justice.
A seven-member panel of the apex court, presided over by Justice Amadu Tanko, fixed the date after adopting the proposed memoranda of issues filed by the parties.
The four suits have been consolidated into two cases for determination.
Justice Torkornoo’s own action, numbered J1/22/2025, has been joined with the case filed by the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems LBG, numbered J1/20/2025.
A separate case filed by Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah, numbered J1/18/2025, has also been consolidated with the action filed by Theodore Kofi Atta Quartey, numbered J1/21/2025.
The cases challenge the constitutional processes activated against the former Chief Justice, including the proceedings before the five-member committee that heard the petitions leading to her removal.
The panel hearing the matter includes Justices Amadu Tanko, Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi, Henry Anthony Kwofie, Senyo Dzamefe, Sir Dominic Denis Adjei, Hafisata Amaleboba and Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo.
Meanwhile, the court has rejected a letter from former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame seeking to withdraw his legal services for Justice Torkornoo.
The court described the letter as defective, saying there was no proof that the former Chief Justice had been served with the notice of withdrawal.
It therefore adopted the processes already filed on her behalf by the former Attorney-General.
The panel has directed the Supreme Court Registrar to serve Justice Torkornoo with the day’s proceedings and the withdrawal notice.
The court said if she wishes to file any further processes after service, she must do so before the July 2 judgment date.
