The Supreme Court has indefinitely postponed hearing a high-stakes injunction application aimed at pausing the potential impeachment of the Chief Justice.
The suit, filed by Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the NPP Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, calls for the suspension of the impeachment process until the court rules on his writ questioning the constitutionality of the ongoing proceedings.
At today’s sitting, a five-member panel led by Justice Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu disclosed that the matter had to be adjourned following a formal request from the Office of the Attorney-General.
According to Justice Mensa-Bonsu, the Attorney-General had written to the Chief Justice, requesting that all court matters involving the office be deferred for the week due to a State Attorneys’ conference underway in Accra.
Despite the panel's prior awareness of the request, State Attorney Reginald Odoi appeared in person to relay the message on behalf of the Attorney-General, citing respect for the authority of the Supreme Court.
Counsel for the applicant, Godfred Yeboah Dame—himself a former Attorney-General—expressed surprise over the absence of the Attorney-General or a deputy, given the constitutional weight of the matter.
However, the court clarified that it lacked the authority to fix a new date, as the request had been addressed directly to the Chief Justice.
