A 38-year-old military officer, Staff Sergeant Clement Ayomah, has been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly swindling 75 individuals out of a total sum of GH¢723,000.00 under the pretext of securing them positions within Ghana’s security agencies.
Currently held by the Ghana Military Police, Ayomah has entered a plea of not guilty to charges of defrauding by false pretences, in violation of Section 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Appearing in full military attire, the accused denied the charges when he took the stand before Presiding Judge Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Wonder, stated that in September 2021, Ayomah approached Police Officer Gilbert Gli of the Techiman Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), claiming he could facilitate recruitment into various national security agencies through his connections.
Relying on this representation, Officer Gli mobilised 75 interested individuals, who collectively contributed GH¢723,000.00, which was handed over to Ayomah. However, the accused allegedly failed to deliver on his promise, securing no recruitments for the group.
Despite several follow-ups, only GH¢155,000.00 was refunded, leaving an outstanding amount of over GH¢568,000.00. A formal complaint was subsequently lodged with the Accra Regional CID, leading to Ayomah’s arrest by military police.
During proceedings, defence counsel appealed for bail, arguing that the accused posed no flight risk and is also a key witness in an ongoing Court Martial related to the same issue at Burma Camp, scheduled for April 11, 2025.
The prosecution raised no objections to the bail request. The court, however, granted bail in the amount of GH¢600,000.00 with three sureties—one of whom must present valid title documents equivalent to the bail sum.
Until the bail conditions are satisfied, Ayomah is to remain in military police custody. The case has been adjourned to May 28, 2025.
