Six persons arrested in Kumasi for attack, robbery of bank customers
According to Regional Police Commander DCOP Emmanuel Teye Cudjoe, the group trailed individuals who withdrew large amounts of money from financial institutions and then broke into their vehicles to steal the cash.
Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested six suspects — five Nigerians and one Ghanaian — believed to be behind a spate of robberies targeting bank customers in Kumasi.
According to Regional Police Commander DCOP Emmanuel Teye Cudjoe, the group trailed individuals who withdrew large amounts of money from financial institutions and then broke into their vehicles to steal the cash. These robberies had been occurring for about a month.
Their arrests followed coordinated police intelligence and video footage from the police emergency command centre’s surveillance system. The gang was identified using a gold-coloured Toyota Highlander (GT 2471-14) and a black Toyota Highlander (GX 7124-12), both fitted with fake license plates.
On the morning of Thursday, June 19, 2025, police arrested three more suspects: 29-year-old taxi driver Russell Ekenze, 49-year-old Francis Friday, and 51-year-old trader Linus Agwazie. During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to being part of a larger criminal network.
“They admitted to several operations in Kumasi, including thefts near Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Mayanka, Asokwa, Kumasi Central Mosque, ShopRite, and the Georgia Hotel area,” DCOP Cudjoe said during a press briefing.
The suspects also named others in the syndicate—Cosmas Maduabuchukwu, Ezuchukwu, C.J, DD, and Lele—as key accomplices. Cosmas reportedly sustained gunshot wounds during an attempted arrest but managed to escape.
The two vehicles used by the gang have been seized, and the suspects are currently in custody. Police have launched a manhunt for Cosmas and the remaining fugitives.
Preliminary investigations suggest that all members of the syndicate are Nigerian nationals, except for one Ghanaian identified as “DD.” The arrested suspects have been arraigned and are in lawful remand.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has reassured the public of its commitment to keep communities safe and bring all perpetrators to justice.
