An unemployed man has been remanded by the Enchi District Magistrate Court after admitting he stole GH¢20,000 from a trader at the Asankrangwa-Takoradi lorry station.

Abraham William Abudu Hakim pleaded guilty to stealing, but the court deferred sentencing to May 14, 2026.

The court, presided over by His Worship Lawrence Buanor-Bue, ordered that he remain in police custody until the next date.

Police Inspector Stephen Offei Asante told the court that the complainant, Genevieve Gyan, is a trader based in Asankrangwa.

He said the accused and the complainant lived in the same area and knew each other before the incident.

According to the prosecution, Hakim went to the complainant’s drinks shop at the Asankrangwa-Takoradi lorry station at about 9:30am on May 4, 2026.

He reportedly asked to be hired as a labourer.

The complainant agreed and allowed him to help arrange drinks in the shop.

The prosecution said Hakim left the shop at about 1:00pm.

Soon after, Ms Gyan discovered that GH¢20,000 she had kept in the shop, together with her daily sales, was missing.

She suspected Hakim and began looking for him.

The court heard that she later received information that he was at a place alleged to be used for the sale of cannabis.

Ms Gyan went there and, with help from people nearby, arrested him and handed him over to the police at Asankrangwa.

Police said Hakim admitted the offence after he was cautioned.

He later handed over GH¢13,200 to investigators.

The case has been adjourned to May 14 for sentencing.
