Seven arrested after New Winneba clashes leave three dead

Seven people have been arrested following violent clashes between Gomoa and Effutu groups at New Winneba in the Central Region.

The injured victims are receiving treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba and the Winneba Municipal Hospital.
According to the Public Affairs Officer of the Central Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie, the clashes are linked to a longstanding land dispute between the two groups.
Police said the incident began at about 10:40 a.m. when about 300 people from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze allegedly entered New Winneba.
The group was allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks.
They are said to have attacked residents and vandalised shops, stores and other properties in the community.
Personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to the area to contain the violence and restore calm.
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has also sent additional personnel from the National Police Headquarters to reinforce security in the area.
Two armoured vehicles have also been deployed as part of the reinforcement.
Police say the situation is now under control.
Security personnel remain stationed in New Winneba and surrounding communities to prevent further disturbances and maintain peace.
Investigations are continuing into the violence and the roles allegedly played by the arrested persons.
