The Railway Workers Union (RWU) of Ghana has called off its planned strike and demonstration that was expected to take place on September 30, 2025, following instructions from the National Labour Commission (NLC).

In a correspondence to the Greater Accra Regional Commander of the Police Service, the union explained that the NLC had replied to its earlier petition dated September 16, 2025, and directed that all planned industrial action be suspended to pave the way for negotiations.

“The Commission has directed that we stay our intended action and appear for negotiations on 30th September 2025. We remain committed to this process and will honour the Commission’s directive in good faith,” the union stated.

Despite complying with the directive, the union cautioned that it will resume its strike if the upcoming talks fail to resolve its demands.

Earlier, the RWU had declared its intention to embark on a nationwide strike and peaceful protest on September 30, 2025, citing over a year of unpaid wages and benefits.

In its notification to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, the group highlighted that salary arrears dating back to October 2024 had triggered severe financial strain, broken marriages, health problems, and interrupted the education of members’ children.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has thrown its support behind the RWU, warning government to settle the arrears by September 30 or risk a nationwide labour action.

TUC’s General Secretary, Joshua Ansah, underscored the urgency of the matter, urging government to “find any means” to pay the outstanding debts.
