The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) having concluded its nationwide hearings, has referred about 155 public institutions to the Attorney-General’s Office for possible prosecution.

The institutions, mainly local assemblies and educational institutions, were cited in the 2018 Auditor’s General’s report for various procurement breaches.

Some of these institutions cited in the report are the Ho Technical University, Accra Technical University, Koforidua Technical University, and all Pre-University educational institutions in the Volta and Oti Regions.

“Having concluded our hearings on the 2018 Auditor General’s report, we have in excess of 155 referrals for criminal prosecution, and which included Assemblies and educational institutions,” Rockson Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi and a member of the committee told reporters in Ho.

He noted that for some time now, prosecutions falling out of the committee’s work had not been pursued and therefore members had agreed to activate the committee's referral powers.

“We hope this would help enhance public accounting because there is a new sheriff in town who is prosecuting people,” Mr. Dafeamekpor said.

Chairman of the committee, Hon. James Klutse Avedzi said the Public Accounts Committee has taken the stance to increase referrals of defaulters to the Attorney General’s (AG) office for possible prosecution.

He added that the Committee’s work would help increase deterrence and ensure public servants do the right thing.
