The Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K.Bagbin has chastised the President of the Republic on his comments on the Supreme Court Judgment that allowed Deputy Speaker to vote while presiding in the House.

He indicates that he wouldn’t have commented on the matter but for the president’s comment which he has described as “unfortunate and myopic”

“I have resisted the temptation of making a comment on the judgment of the Supreme Court on the issue of the voting rights of Deputy Speakers when presiding but the unfortunate and myopic comments of the President has compelled me to let it out”, the Speaker said.

In an interview, the President noted that Parliament is not above the laws of the country thus must respect the apex Court’s judgment on the matter.

“All organs of the state including me as the head of the executive, are subject to the constitution. There is nobody or organ in the Ghanaian state that is above the laws of the land,” the president stated in part.

He was also of the view that the Supreme Court has powers to make pronouncements on matters that concern Parliament contrary to held views.

However, Mr. Bagbin is of the view that the President’s comment creates disaffection between the Judiciary and the Legislature.

Further to the above, the Speaker described the Supreme Court’s ruling as absurd and reckless.

Particularly, he expressed his worry about the fact that all members of the panel agreed to the position that is likely to lead to an interference in the affairs of the legislature
