President John Dramani Mahama has officially terminated the appointments of all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) along with appointed Assembly Members across the country.
This marks one of the president's initial actions following his inauguration as Ghana's 6th President on January 7, 2025.
The decision, which takes effect immediately, complies with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) and its amendment, the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940).
A formal letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President, informed the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development in Accra about the directive.
As per the directive, Coordinating Directors of the respective Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) will temporarily assume the role of acting chief executives until fresh appointments are made.
This move is anticipated to lay the groundwork for appointing new local leaders, in alignment with the government’s strategy to advance decentralization and drive development.
