President Akufo-Addo petitioned to remove High Court Judge

According to the five-page document of the petition, Maria O’ Sullivan claims the Judge abused her office and privileges by procuring policemen to intimidate staff of Mariville Homes Limited.

A businesswoman and Managing Director of Mariville Homes Limited, Maria O’ Sullivan, has petitioned President Nana Akufo-Addo to remove from office, Justice Gifty Agyei Addo, a Justice of the High Court.

According to the five-page document of the petition, Maria O’ Sullivan claims the Judge abused her office and privileges by procuring policemen to intimidate staff of Mariville Homes Limited.

She also alleges that the judge played a role in the procurement of a High Court judgment based on a forged document. 

And thirdly, she alleges that the Judge interfered in a High Court case involving land jointly owned with her husband in which her husband was the plaintiff.

It is not clear yet if these claims are true. But on a matter like this, President Akufo-Addo, pursuant to Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution is expected to refer the petition to the Chief Justice for determination and further action.

Justice Gifty Agyei Addo is among persons that were recently recommended by Attorney-General Godfred Dame for appointment as Court of Appeal Justices.

She’s noted for presiding over high public interest cases.

Some include those involving the General Legal Council’s suspension of now Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu, the Rastafarian students against Achimota School, Ashiaman Member of Parliament and the Electoral Commission, the revocation of licenses of GN Bank and Unicredit, among others.
