Presidency orders NIB probe into claims of bribes for overseas scholarships
The instruction, signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, follows a radio discussion that has circulated widely and triggered public backlash over the integrity of the scholarship programme.
The Office of the President has directed the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to investigate allegations that people paid bribes to obtain government-sponsored scholarships to study abroad.
The instruction, signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, follows a radio discussion that has circulated widely and triggered public backlash over the integrity of the scholarship programme.
The allegations were raised on Sompa 106.5 FM during a Twi-language panel discussion in which Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, a former chief executive of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), claimed an individual paid money to secure an overseas scholarship.
In the letter to the NIB Director-General, the Presidency described the matter as serious and of “grave public concern”, saying it runs counter to the government’s stated commitment to transparency, integrity and equal access to educational opportunities.
The NIB has been tasked to establish the factual basis of the claim, identify anyone involved and determine whether the allegation is true. It is expected to submit its findings directly to the President for consideration and any further action.
