Policewoman’s murder case adjourned over AG advice delay
When the matter was called on Wednesday, the prosecution said the duplicate docket was not yet ready for submission to the Attorney-General’s Department for advice.
The Adabraka District Court has adjourned the case involving policewoman Gifty Oppong, who is accused of killing a taxi driver at Tetegu, near Weija in Accra.
The case will return to court on May 26.
When the matter was called on Wednesday, the prosecution said the duplicate docket was not yet ready for submission to the Attorney-General’s Department for advice.
Inspector Sandra Amarkye, who held brief for the prosecution, therefore asked the court for more time.
The relieving judge questioned the delay, noting that the case had been before the court since February 3, 2026.
The court directed the prosecution to speed up work on the duplicate docket and forward it to the Attorney-General’s Department.
Gifty Oppong was subsequently remanded into police custody.
Her lawyer, Raymond Felli, told the court he would apply for bail at the High Court.
Oppong is facing a murder charge, but the court has not taken her plea.
She is alleged to have shot and killed Edward Awuku Owusu, also known as Papa Kwesi, after a confrontation.
The incident reportedly happened on January 19, 2026, at Tetegu.
According to preliminary police investigations, the victim was taken to the Police Hospital after the shooting but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police also said Oppong sustained injuries to her head and both legs after she was allegedly hit by a vehicle while trying to leave the scene.
She was later taken to hospital for treatment.
Investigators retrieved one live 9mm round, a magazine and one spent 9mm cartridge from the scene.
