Policewoman remanded over alleged killing of taxi driver at Tetegu

A police officer, Gifty Oppong, has appeared before the Adabraka District Court in Accra, charged with the murder of a taxi driver in the Tetegu area near Weija.

Oppong is accused of shooting and killing Edward Awuku Owusu, also known as Papa Kwesi, after a confrontation, according to court proceedings.

The court did not take her plea and ordered that she be held in lawful custody. She is expected to return to court on 25 February 2026.

In a separate statement, the Ghana Police Service said it is investigating the incident, which it said occurred on 19 January 2026 around Tetegu, near Weija.

Police said preliminary findings indicate the victim was rushed to the Police Hospital after being shot, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The service also said the officer sustained injuries to her head and both legs after she was struck by a vehicle while allegedly attempting to leave the scene, and she was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said items retrieved from the area included a live 9mm round, a magazine and an empty 9mm cartridge.
