Police in Oti Region say they have uncovered a large haul of suspected cannabis worth more than GH¢1.4m from a truck stopped at a checkpoint late last year.

Officers said the Volvo truck, registration GC 3522-09, was intercepted on 29 December 2025 at the Bonakye checkpoint while travelling towards Passa, after intelligence suggested it was carrying illicit goods.

Police said the driver and a second occupant ran away when the vehicle was stopped, leaving the truck behind with the ignition key still inside.

Investigators later obtained a court order to open the vehicle. The Jasikan Circuit Court, presided over by Lambert Y Kerieba, approved the request on 24 February 2026, according to police.

The search was carried out at Kwanta with representatives from several security and emergency agencies present, including the police, military and intelligence services, as well as officials from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Narcotics Control Commission. Members of the media also observed the exercise, police said.

Officers reported finding 320 cartons of bottled mineral water in the truck. Beneath the cartons, they said, were 91 bales of suspected cannabis.

Police said the bales contained 7,173 slabs of the suspected drug, which they estimate has a street value exceeding GH¢1.4m.

The seized items are being held as investigations continue, with police urging the public to provide information that could help identify those behind the shipment and support efforts to combat drug trafficking.
