The Ghana Police Service has initiated a nationwide manhunt for a group of armed assailants responsible for the fatal shooting of two plain-clothed police officers at Poyamirea, a community near Binduri in the Upper East Region.

According to a statement released by the Director of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the tragic event took place on the morning of Sunday, April 13. The officers were reportedly traveling on a private motorbike from Bongo to Binduri when they were ambushed by the armed men.

The attackers are said to have shot the officers at close range before fleeing the scene with the motorbike. At this stage, the names of the deceased have not been made public, as the police seek to notify the families in accordance with traditional customs.

Expressing the Service’s grief, ACP Ansah-Akrofi conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen officers, as well as to the Upper East Regional Commander and personnel in the region.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, colleagues, and all affected,” the statement noted.

The police have assured the public of their unwavering commitment to tracking down the suspects. “We will arrest the perpetrators of this heinous act and ensure they face the full rigours of the law,” ACP Ansah-Akrofi affirmed.

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
