Police foil GH¢1.3m gold robbery plot in high-stakes intelligence operation

An elaborate gold robbery attempt has been thwarted by the Ghana Police Service following a decisive intelligence-led operation along the Accra–Akuapem–Mamfe highway.

On Thursday, 26th June 2025, officers arrested three suspects—Adams Zibo, Massawud Yussif, and Kenneth Khartey—who had allegedly conspired to steal a gold consignment valued at more than GH¢1.3 million.

According to police sources, the plot was uncovered a day earlier when intelligence revealed that a driver of a gold dealer and a man posing as his bodyguard were planning to intercept the consignment during its scheduled delivery. Acting swiftly, the Special Support Unit (SSU) of the National Headquarters moved to intercept the suspects before the crime could unfold.

Kenneth Khartey was intercepted near Akuapem–Mamfe while shadowing the delivery vehicle on a motorbike. His arrest was followed by the capture of Zibo and Yussif later that evening at East Legon, where they were found in an unregistered blue Hyundai vehicle believed to be part of their getaway plan.

Investigations have confirmed that the suspects had sourced firearms, acquired motorbikes for mobility, and secured a vehicle to aid in their escape after the heist. Police say the trio were also tasked with handling the disposal of the stolen gold.

Thanks to the timely intervention, the gold dealer emerged unharmed, and the entire consignment—approximately 1.2 kilograms of gold, valued at GH¢1,350,343.53—was recovered intact.

The suspects are currently assisting police with further inquiries and are expected to be arraigned soon.
